{"id":1676,"date":"2019-02-14T16:08:06","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T23:08:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/aitkenlab\/?p=1676"},"modified":"2019-02-14T16:08:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T23:08:06","slug":"what-will-your-city-be-like-in-60-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/aitkenlab\/2019\/02\/14\/what-will-your-city-be-like-in-60-years\/","title":{"rendered":"What will your city be like in 60 years?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/colinmahony.wixsite.com\/forestclimates\">Colin<\/a> started publishing his papers on calculating climate similarity and novel climates, we <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/aitkenlab\/2018\/01\/28\/the-homebrew-series-novel-climates-in-bc-by-colin-mahony-et-al\/\">wished for<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0a tool that lets me plug in coordinates, a year and an emissions scenario and get a map of climate analogs and their associated ecosystems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Looks like someone else was reading Colin&#8217;s papers and thinking along the same lines!<\/p>\n<p>This week, Fitzpatrick and Dunn published<a href=\"https:\/\/fitzlab.shinyapps.io\/cityapp\/\"> an online map<\/a> that lets you look at cities and their future climate analogues and along with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-019-08540-3\"> paper in Nature<\/a> using the sigma dissimilarity metric that <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/gcb.13645\">Colin <em>et. al<\/em><\/a> developed.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to turn on the climate similarity map option when you use Fitzpatrick and Dunn&#8217;s tool &#8211; it&#8217;ll show you how analogous the closest analogue city really is! Seattle is Vancouver&#8217;s closest analogue, but it&#8217;s not a good one.
