Memo to Evan Crisp

In this assignment, students were provided a sample email from a “classmate” named Evan Crisp. In this email, Evan is writing to a professor asking to be enrolled in a course that is already full. Evan has not received a response back from the professor, and asks the students for help understanding why. The email does not demonstrate proper email etiquette. There are spelling mistakes, the formatting is not correct, and most importantly, it is disrespectful towards the professor. Evan does not incorporate the “YOU” attitude in his writing, which is meant to focus on the recipient. The task in this assignment is to provide Evan with a list of suggestions for improving his emails to professors, to guarantee a quick response. This is done by referencing a handout about the “YOU” attitude.

This assignment was quite helpful in creating an understanding of providing suggestions and corrections to peers in a professional manner. The handout that was referenced in this assignment provided a thorough overview of a writing style called the “YOU” attitude. This style focuses on the recipient by emphasizing respect and understanding. The handout provided me with suggestions for improving my writing to others. For example, I had not understood that the use of imperatives was something that should be avoided. With this suggestion alone, I feel that I am better able to write emails, memos, and letters that provide suggestions that I was previously. Overall, I was very happy with the final result of this assignment.
