We started class today by getting into groups of 4 to discuss and reflected on our literacy assignments. In our groups we discussed a number of questions but focused in on why our literacies were so important to us and what impact they had made on our lives. My literacy, sailing, is something I have been doing since I was 13 years old. It has been an invaluable skill to have as I travelled, studied and worked across the world. Pretty much anywhere there is a body of water there are sailors. It enabled me to join my university’s team where I made many of my closest friends. I taught sailing and managed my university’s club, giving me a host of skills.
In the second part of the class we were paired off with another student who had been placed into a similar grade level for their pracitucm. My partner is also in the Montessori cohort and we both have 4, 5, 6 classrooms. For our read aloud lesson plan we have decided to do a Remembrance Day book called ‘A Bear in War’ by Stephanie Innes, Harry Endrulat and Brian Deines. This book is especially topical because of the time of year we are doing our two week practicums in and also because it is a Canadian story. I am looking forward to using this book with the grade 5s in my classroom, I hope they will enjoy it as much as I will!
