Business Ethics: Apple and the hidden worm

Being one of the largest tech companies in the world and having      an average gross profit margin of 40%, Apple is a tremendously successful business that most people look up to. In a business workshop I attended during jumpstart, we were asked which companies we favoured the most – Apple was the one company that kept being mentioned.

Yet, behind the glamorous iPhone series lies also a conveniently forgotten truth – the iPhone emits an immense amount of phone radiation. According to a post by RFSAFE (Radiation Frequency Safety), the specific absorption rate radiation exposure levels are only 0.01 lower than the Federal Communications Commission’s limit of 1.6 watts per kilogram. These exposure levels are considered to be safe when held 5millimetres away from the body at all times. To make matters worse, Apple does not intend to change any of it. The app developing company Tawkon has developed a way to track phone radiation levels – and yet it has been rejected from listing itself on the Appstore.

In this regard, Apple doesn’t live up to the praise it receives, most importantly because it disregards safety concerns all together. I think that at the very least, Apple should address these concerns, and provide a deeper insight on whether or not the high amount of radiation exposure levels are harmful to the human body.
