Hello fellow classmates!
My name is Ali Hasan and I am a fourth year BCS (Bachelor of Computer Science) student at UBC.
This is my second bachelors degree, with the first being in Canada. I did my first bachelors degree in Public Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and graduated in May 2020. Moreover. during my first degree, I had the privilege to study abroad at Queen Mary University of London in the Engineering department.
In my first degree, I started off with the desires of becoming a medical doctor. I had completed all the pre-medical requirements, and began to study for the MCAT (medical school exam). In addition, I had been a research assistant for Renal and Cardiovascular Disease Research Laboratory. During this time, I was able to examine the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions on the health and quality of life of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
However, before beginning to study for the MCAT, I had the privilege to take a computer science class while abroad in London. During this time, I was first exposed to computer science and fell in love with the subject due to how creative and challenging it was. From that point forward, I started self-teaching myself more about Computer Science and decided that I wanted to learn more about the subject. This led me to putting my dreams of becoming a doctor on hold, and enrolling in the BCS program here at the University of British Columbia. Since then, I have completed a full academic year and recently, finished a Software Engineering co-op this past semester.
After graduation, my primary professional interest is to fully go into software engineering. I hope to work within the healthcare industry, and apply the knowledge I learned from my first degree with the knowledge I learned from my computer science degree. In addition, I hope to potentially go to medical school and become a family doctor at some point in my career.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all this term!
Best,
Ali Hasan
