Welcome to my Web Folio. This website provides a comprehensive overview of the work I completed between May and August 2021 while taking ENGL 301 at UBC. The navigation bar at the top of this page can be used to visit different pages of the folio. The “Biography” page provides a brief overview of my academic and work background, whereas the “Blog” page contains reflective posts written while I was taking ENGL 301. The “Work Examples” pages contain some of the assignments I completed throughout the term, while the “Application Package” and “Resume” were created to highlight some of my career skills when applying for a job.
Introduction to ENGL 301
ENGL 301 is taught by Dr. Erika Paterson. This course is offered by UBC’s Vancouver campus as an online, distance-education course. This summer session, the course runs from May 10 to August 12, 2021. There is no final exam for this course, as most work will consist of either independent or group assignments which are submitted throughout the term. There are both smaller assignments and three major assignments in this course. The three major assignments are the Formal Report, Job Application package, and Web Folio. The primary textbook for this course is Technical Communication 15th edition, by John M. Lannon and Laura J. Gurak. ENGL 301 is structured in to four distinct units, each three weeks long. The overall aim of this course is to help students further develop their writing and self-editing skills.
The main reason I am taking this course is that I would like to further refine my writing skills. As a student who will be graduating from university soon, I believe that excellent writing skills will be a very important asset in any future career I choose to pursue. Although I have taken a number of English courses and classes in the past, this particular course is unique due to its focus on technical communication, especially in the context of business settings. Other English courses I have taken in the past at UBC mainly focused on essay-writing or literature. Such topics, while useful in some aspects, are not directly transposable to the skills required in today’s workplaces. I am particularly interested in improving and refining my resume-writing and job application skills, as I have yet to receive any formal instruction in this area. Being able to write clear, concise and captivating job applications will be an essential skill for me in the coming months.
