What I have learned in UBC
For four months, through the greatest program GCCP, I have learned lots of things not only just knowledge but also something which can be gotten from real experience. Also, since here is Vancouver, to communicate with instructors I need to speak, read and write in English and these whole process made me improve English better than before.
There are three big things what I’ve learned in this course, presentation skills , intercultural communication, work place, business and also about cultural things.
- Presentation skills
In two months, we should give many presentations based on what we’ve learned. Actually it was really challenging for us to make a presentation. Because during the preparation, we should use English which is not our first language, so we had difficult time in making materials. Also, most of the students were afraid of presentation in front of audience, as in Korea we are not accustomed to give a presentation in class, so it’s little awkward for us almost every class to prepare some presentation. However, we should do and we did. We learned about the skills in well-organized theory from basic to hard and also by practicing more than one time per a week we found ourselves to improve in presentation. By preparing this whole things, we can understand the things more easily than before. I feel confidence about it. These pictures following are the my presentation’s pages.
- Work place, Intercultural communications, Business etc
The contents of class are relating to business, work place skills and intercultural communications skills. At first, these things are little awkward for me because my major is totally different part from these things. Therefore, in first weeks it’s hard for me to take the class. As time goes by, I got more interested in this class and could change my mind that it’s also intellectually stimulating thing for me even though it’s new. We usually learned how to act in work place where is in Western culture, how to communicate with people who are from different cultures and have different manners, and how each brand promotes itself like that. These things are most realistic things in our life and, also useful for me to see and work in broaden world.
- Culture
In this GCCP program, I learned not only English and business skills also about something cultural things. For example, as I spent time with Canadian instructors I learned how to adapt to different cultures and knew how important keep the time every class and also how can I act to people well. These three things are not acquired in class time by knowledge, these are learned by my real experiences. Therefore, it comes to me more bigger than other things and also came in my memory clearly. By learning to treat people who are different from me, I think I can understand myself more than before as well as others.
