(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/11\/04\/us-groupon-idUSTRE7A352020111104\">Reuter&#8217;s article)<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It looks like Groupon, the 3-year-old coupon site, has finally emerged on top after encountering set back after set back, heavy competition (Jasmine Kirk made a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/jasminkirk\/2011\/11\/06\/groupon-lacking-in-competitive-advantage\/\">great P5F<\/a> about this) and critique (see Logan Graham&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/logangraham\/2011\/09\/26\/i-hate-you-groupon-sincerely-business\/\">blog post<\/a> on some unsatisfied users!), and, all in all, very little faith from the experts. \u00a0In fact, I signed up for the site just to see what all the hype was about.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, somehow, instead the anticipated flop (by me, at least), Groupon has managed to keep their share price above $20, valuing their company at nearly $13 billion&#8230;not bad for the leader of &#8216;daily deals&#8217;. \u00a0Check it out:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-99\" title=\"Picture 8\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alisoneb\/files\/2011\/11\/Picture-8-300x102.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alisoneb\/files\/2011\/11\/Picture-8-300x102.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alisoneb\/files\/2011\/11\/Picture-8.png 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However surprised we may be at Groupon&#8217;s success, you can bet that investors everywhere are keeping close tabs on Groupon in order to anticipate the value of potential shares for other primarily-online companies like Facebook and Twitter. \u00a0Personally, I find it very interesting that these internet start ups manage to dominate in the market! However, I guess it shouldn&#8217;t surprise me given the way technology has become inseparable from business (throwback to or BTM class!)&#8230;looks like it&#8217;s time to start investing in the world wide web.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Groupon Inc raised $700 million after increasing the size of its initial public offering, becoming the largest IPO by a U.S. Internet company since Google Inc raised $1.7 billion in 2004.
