Where did you do your undergrad? Law school? Other degrees?

I did my undergrad at the University of Rochester, I went to law school at Columbia University, and I have a PhD (in history) from the University of Wisconsin.

When did you come to UBC?

I started at UBC last year.

What courses will you be teaching at Allard in 2018-2019?

I’ll be teaching Business Organizations and Corporate Transactions.

What are your research interests?

My research focuses on the history of American and Canadian corporate law, though I’m also interested in corporate law generally.

What is your non-law dream job?

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a journalist.

What is your favourite book or movie?

My favorite book is Neuromancer, by William Gibson.

What is your favourite judicial decision and why?

Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), which struck down legal prohibitions on desecrating the American flag. This case stands for the crucially important principle that political speech is protected by the First Amendment, no matter how offensive to the political majority.

What’s a UBC Campus hidden gem that more people should know about?

Uh… the business school building has a nice view.

Anything else?

I may be American (sorry), but I’m happy to be in Canada.
