Something you’ll discover very quickly at Allard is the sheer volume of law firms in Vancouver. As a first year law student (or, to use law school lingo, 1L), interacting with law firms can feel overwhelming and intimidating – but it doesn’t need to. That’s where we come in to help.

The Allard Law & Business Society (“ALBS”) is a great forum for networking with the largest corporate firms in Vancouver. Every year, four 1L students (one per small group) are elected by their peers to represent the ALBS. Each elected 1L Representative gets the opportunity to liaise with two to three corporate law firms and organize an event for their classmates to attend. Not only is this a fantastic way to meet lawyers and get to know some large Vancouver firms, it’s always a fun night out!

Past events include a champagne tasting, a Canucks game, a trivia night, a scavenger hunt, and many more. ALBS events are invaluable opportunities to help new law students break the ice and become more comfortable speaking to lawyers who practice business law. That being said, you definitely don’t need a business background (or even necessarily want to pursue business law) in order to run for a 1L Representative position or attend our events. We just want students who are eager to serve as part of our team and can work with firms in facilitating/promoting events to their fellow classmates.

If you are interested in getting involved, make sure to run for a 1L Representative position during the elections in the first few weeks of law school, and stay tuned for Facebook notifications of upcoming ALBS events. Don’t hesitate to e-mail us at allardlbs@gmail.com if you have any questions. Oh, and welcome to Allard Law – it’s going to be a wonderful year!
