Taking Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allyship is a popular concept, whose definition can vary. We define allyship as <\/span><b>taking action to support those who might otherwise be or feel excluded.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Reactive Allyship<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often when thinking about allyship, we think about reactive allyship \u2013 reacting to bias when we see it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confronting disrespectful, gender-biased comments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing inappropriate gender-related jokes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calling out implicit stereotyping (e.g., a coworker assuming a woman would not be interested in a position that requires technical expertise)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questioning the lack of women candidates on a job shortlist<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>Ada, Ben, &amp; Rajesh<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s return to Ada\u2019s interaction with Ben. there are still instances where people might not witness or notice bias when it happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So if reactive actions like confrontations are limited to instances of bias that get noticed, what other options do Ada and her colleagues have?<\/b><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>From Ada&#8217;s Perspective&#8230;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-307 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/allyshipatwork\/files\/2022\/11\/Ada-Icon-226x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cI&#8217;m glad Rajesh called out that comment Ben made.
