Photo: N Hewitt, Dec. 2018<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Biogeography Teaching and Research Lab is a part of the Department of Geography at UBC \u2013 Vancouver. The lab is under the direction of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/about-page\/\">Dr. Nina Hewitt<\/a>. The lab has working relationships with UBC&#8217;s Emerging Media Lab, SEEDS Sustainability Program, Vantage College and local nature organizations (<a href=\"http:\/\/pacificspiritparksociety.org\/\">Pacific Spirit Park Society<\/a>). It benefits from the ongoing project assistance of a number of keen and talented undergraduate Geographical Sciences and Environment and Sustainability students at UBC!<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the Biogeography Lab is to document, study and teach about ecosystems in temperate and montane forests and savanna, and in alpine tundra (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/about-page\/\">see more<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1812\" style=\"width: 421px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1812\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/files\/2020\/05\/1C6E2EA3-977D-4E9D-B50A-B27C9448F6F7-e1590272791657.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"340\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An oak cross-section used to determine presettlement fire intervals in Black oak savanna, High Park, Toronto. Photo: N Hewitt 2011<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We employ field vegetation sampling techniques, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/alpine-flora-of-the-karakoram-historical-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">archival<\/a> and modern <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/bc-taxa\/\">photographic documentation<\/a> of taxa and landscapes, and create open educational resources including <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/augmented-field-trips\/\">Augmented<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/virtual-field-trips\/\">Virtual Reality<\/a> field trips as a way to engage learners in the biogeosciences. Current projects include examining the distributions and climatic responses of ecotonal high alpine plant populations in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/karakoram-plant-baseline-poster-display\/\">Central Karakoram<\/a>; recreational impacts and biodiversity of alpine ecosystems in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/alpine-ecosystems-of-southern-bc\/\">Southern BC<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/garibaldialpine.wixsite.com\/garibaldialpine\/copy-of-our-team-2024\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/geog.ubc.ca\/news\/ubc-researchers-co-launch-alpine-horizons-research-initiative-to-conserve-b-c-coast-mountains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>) ;and documenting the plant species composition and structure of successional <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/pacific-spirit-forest-tour\/\">Coastal Douglas fir <\/a>forests, as well as examining the cultural and biological value of these and other <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/virtual-field-trips\/dakota-bowl-forest\/\">west coast<\/a> forests in BC.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4798\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4798\" style=\"width: 529px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4798\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/alpineplants\/files\/2026\/04\/PXL_20260316_023421765-1024x647.jpeg\" alt=\"Examining plant samples at the museum of New Zealand WELT Herbarium\" width=\"529\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hewitt examines historical plant samples from Mt.
