Course Overview

English is the most used language globally, even though more than half of English speakers are speaking English as a second language. Some people learn English for education purposes, and some learn for business purposes. English 301 is a high-level English course on the UBC Vancouver campus mainly focused on business writing purposes. It is not only for students who aim to improve their writing skills but also for those who want to further their working knowledge.

English 301 is open to all the students on the UBC campus without discipline limitations. Students will learn how to communicate online and written professionally and effectively through textbooks and “lectures” composed by professors. The course is designed to get students fully prepared for entering their careers after graduation.

The course also involves team working for practical purposes, including peer review, discussion, and team assignments in order to prepare students for understanding and communication within a team or a company.

By the end of the course, students should be able to develop a full set of skills of business preparation through a resume, references, reflection, and complete networking profiles like LinkedIn and Web Folio.

As an ESL student, I expect to improve my writing skills for both academic and business purposes, which will help me pursue my future business and activities in Canada. I’ve taken few more high-level English courses to help me in the past, and I believe English 301 will help to improve my English to the next level.  Moreover, I think English 301 will help me prepare to enter the real world in terms of my career since I finish my degree at the end of August. With the rapid development of technology, we write more times than we speak for important information. Thus, writing skills become critical for communication and expression, and I want to be an “expert” communicator when it comes to my career.
