Are you exaggerating a little, Ezra?
‘
Labelling other oil countries as “fascist”, “misogynist” and “dictatorial” doesn’t put Canada up in the sky in the ranks of “good”. In the global market, you may say that it is unethical, or even wrong, to purchase oil from countries like Sudan, but ultimately, our judgement is passing too fast to even fully evaluate the whole situation.
In the political scheme, these countries are in fact struggling in the midst of internal conflicts. Although some may argue that politics is closely related to economics, shouldn’t we give the poor countries (pun intended) a break? As DEVELOPED countries, we should be supporting the DEVELOPING countries, not stealing their last survival bait in the global market.
Besides, if it isn’t for the Americans’ abstraction that they NEED oil (it is not a need, it is a WANT; humans can live without oil), there would be no need to dig frantically at every oil spot in the world. If we chose to purchase and consume “clean” oil only, the world would be out of resources in a matter of years.
So the question is: is it really unethical to purchase oil from these war-stricken countries? Or is it just Canada’s way of persuading the international community to buy their ‘morally-pumped’ oil?
You decide.
