Alright! I have my thesaurus open and I’m ready to overuse it. My first impressions reading ‘Combray’ is that I find myself re-reading a lot. Maybe i’ve fallen out of practice but if so, i’m glad this is the start of me rebuilding my trains of thought.
Note 1 – The authors writing feels more like a conversation to me, or like I’m just observing someone’s life as if I was with them in spirit? Anyways, I like it. Also his use of descriptive words, WOW. It just keeps going until I really paint scene into my head. The text “Why, I went to bed even though mama didn’t say goodnight to me”, heartbreaking, this poor boy is too innocent.
Note 2 – I can’t help but feel bad for the boy, the way he describes his mom as such an angelic figure in his life while others describe him as weak and sensitive and overall just ‘different’ is sad in itself, you can see that he clings onto the one person who shows him love.
Note 3 – Swans character seems to be free- in the sense that he does things that are out of his high social class and doesn’t think too highly of himself. I find it funny how the grandma treats him as a regular fellow and the fact that he allows it to happen and even enjoys it because he keeps going back to their house furthers my suspicion that he is a chill dude. I’m excited to find out more things about him.
Note 4 – GIVE THIS POOR BOY A KISS GOODNIGHT. HELLO? There’s no way that he is longing so much for a kiss goodnight (but I will add I thought he was a little too fixed on a kiss from his mom?idk) but why, WHY is his mom not picking up on this. sheesh. Update: Father to the rescue! After all those pages of legit yearning he finally got comfort. Describing this act as a ‘punishable offence’ rubbed me the wrong way, I mean, I don’t know how young he is but it seems he has convinced himself that wanting love is a sin. Very sad.
Note 6 – I really wish I didn’t have to read this online, a book is so much better and my eyes hurt from looking at a screen. Just a quick question do blue light glasses really work? should I get some for my poor eyes.
Honorable mention: Biscuit and tea text instantly cued the ratatouille scene of tasting the zucchini dish and the food critic thinking of his mom’s zucchini dish.
Anyways, those are my thoughts. This book was very long but I’m glad I finished it. I beat the run on sentences!!
