{"id":251,"date":"2010-01-18T21:43:35","date_gmt":"2010-01-19T05:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amsconfidential.wordpress.com\/?p=251"},"modified":"2011-06-12T19:54:22","modified_gmt":"2011-06-13T03:54:22","slug":"your-campaign-interpretation-guide-poster-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/2010\/01\/18\/your-campaign-interpretation-guide-poster-fun\/","title":{"rendered":"Your campaign interpretation guide: Poster fun!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Campaigning started bright &#8216;n early this morning, and the halls &amp; classrooms are already plastered with posters of varying size and attractiveness.\u00a0 Clearly, a number of people were verrrrry busy with Photoshop over the weekend.\u00a0 This editor couldn&#8217;t help but note that by as early as 9ish, Buchanan B had a heavy emphasis on the presidential campaign: every classroom on the second floor had both a Bijan and a Nat Swift poster; Sean Kim trailed in third by choosing specific areas (although we have to doubt the wisdom of &#8216;top of the recyling bin&#8217; as a location).\u00a0 No doubt dedicated volunteers spent long hours to ensure that we were confronted with the smiling faces of hacks wherever we may go, although we can&#8217;t help but wonder what measures were necessary to keep toiling fingers at the button machines.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_252\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/sweatshop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"size-full wp-image-252\" title=\"sweatshop\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/sweatshop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/sweatshop.jpg 310w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/sweatshop-300x270.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This seemed like a better idea in the strategy meeting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In these dizzying times, it can be hard to properly analyze campaign media sources.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why, after the jump, we&#8217;ve given you our Handy Dandy Campaign Poster Field Guide.\u00a0 It&#8217;s <em>the<\/em> definitive resource to identifying, classifying, and ultimately analyzing the campaign materials with which you&#8217;re about to be, for lack of a better term, flyerfucked.<\/p>\n<p>Should you, by the way, notice that we&#8217;ve an important subgroup, let us know in the comments.\u00a0 Did I mention we love the shit out of comments? OH BOY COMMENTS.<\/p>\n<p><em>FYI: Use of campaign materials for the purposes of this post does not constitute an endorsement in any way, shape, or form.\u00a0 Duh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>The Classic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/bredin_blue1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-254\" title=\"bredin_blue\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/bredin_blue1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/bredin_blue1.jpg 390w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/bredin_blue1-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Classic poster is the simplest type, providing viewers with key pieces of information only: a great big headshot, preferably outdoors; a name; and a position.\u00a0 Sometimes\u2014but not always\u2014these posters will make prominent use of action verbs, like &#8216;VOTE&#8217; or &#8216;CHOOSE&#8217; <span style=\"text-decoration:line-through\">or &#8216;SCREW&#8217;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Pros:<\/strong> Simple message, uncomplicated text.\u00a0 Great for branding a candidate or familiarizing voters with their name.\u00a0 Easily stolen, placed on bedroom ceiling for secretive nighttime viewing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong>Low on information.\u00a0 Pictures not always as flattering as candidates might believe.\u00a0 Lots of empty space provides better graffitti, defacement opportunities.\u00a0 (NB: AMS Confidential does not encourage defacement of candidate materials, except in the comfort &amp; privacy of your own home, or in MS Paint.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Talking Point\/The TMI<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/timchu_poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-255\" title=\"timchu_poster\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/timchu_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/timchu_poster.jpg 604w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/timchu_poster-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Talking Point poster, and its cousin, the TMI, are characterized by their emphasis on information.\u00a0 One or two major differences exist in this category.\u00a0 Whereas the Talking Point (see above) makes judicious use of prioritized information, setting forth a few key points which are subordinate to candidate name &amp; picture, the TMI requires a longer reading time.\u00a0 It conveys more information, but is less effective at a glance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Pros: <\/strong>Conveys platform to students who wouldn&#8217;t attend debates\/check website.\u00a0 Still fun to look at.\u00a0 Allows evaluation of candidate&#8217;s design skills.\u00a0 Entertains voters in line for bathroom, to enter classroom, etc.\u00a0 Can be combined with other poster types.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong>Requires time to fully absorb.\u00a0 Talking points easily criticized as misleading.\u00a0 Occasionally, information overload.\u00a0 High likelihood that more than 3 fonts and\/or &#8216;interesting&#8217; typeface will be used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Golden Boy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/omgbijan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-258\" title=\"omgbijan\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/omgbijan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/omgbijan.jpg 3300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/omgbijan-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/omgbijan-662x1024.jpg 662w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Golden Boy (or girl) works from the Socialist handbook of politicking\u2014he or she uses a higher-level and -quality shot than their competition, and makes it the focus of the poster.\u00a0 Candidates who aspire to Golden status gaze warmly into something, be it our eyes or the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Pros:<\/strong> Heartwarming, often dreamy.\u00a0 Gives one a sense of calm and security.\u00a0 Generally combined with the Talking Point to provide a good mix of information &amp; visual stimulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong>If not handled correctly, schlocky as all get out.\u00a0 Strong possibility that candidates will try to cast their opponents in a less golden light.\u00a0 Candidate may be taking him\/herself too seriously.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Lookalikes: <\/strong>the New Hope.\u00a0 Yeah, we&#8217;re looking at you, Sean Kim, with your Obama posters.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t fool us with that sheepish look, no matter how adorable it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fun One: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/nats_poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-259\" title=\"nats_poster\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/nats_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/nats_poster.jpg 469w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/nats_poster-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Candidates who put up a &#8216;fun&#8217; or &#8216;kooky&#8217; poster may be trying to set themselves apart from their opponents or emphasize their approachability\/concern for students\/commitment to communication\/etc.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the postering exclamation point.\u00a0 Like the Golden Boy, the Fun Guy relies largely on their photographer to communicate their message, although serious text is important to present a complete message.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Pros: <\/strong>Like the Golden Boy, heartwarming, often dreamy.\u00a0 Inviting to first-time voters, some (but not all) jaded hacks.\u00a0 Possible nice contrast with srs business text = more complete picture of candidate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong>Again, potentially schlocky.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rebel Yell:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/rodrigo_marchposter.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-260\" title=\"rodrigo_marchposter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/rodrigo_marchposter.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/rodrigo_marchposter.png 886w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/rodrigo_marchposter-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By far the most politicized of our postering categories, the Rebel Yell often includes no images whatsoever of the candidate.\u00a0 Rather, they attempt to visually link said candidate to an idea or cause close to his\/her heart: the Farm, the Knoll, Student Advocacy, etc.\u00a0 Examples we&#8217;ve seen have been low on text, high on things that just plain don&#8217;t look fun.\u00a0 Like maybe the anti-unicorn junta is coming to town or something.\u00a0 Like we should all be very, very afraid, or aware, or both.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Pros: <\/strong>Message, once figured out, is strong.\u00a0 Scare tactics often effective.\u00a0 Challenges viewers; invites a second or third look, if only to figure out what poster is actually for.\u00a0 Printing costs for black &amp; white probably much cheaper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong>Could easily go unseen next to larger, more colorful posters.\u00a0 Requires thinking, interpretation, which students as a whole not strong on.\u00a0 Kind of terrifying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Total Hottie:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/ekat_hottieposter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-263\" title=\"ekat_hottieposter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/ekat_hottieposter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/ekat_hottieposter.jpg 1584w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/ekat_hottieposter-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amsconfidential\/files\/2010\/01\/ekat_hottieposter-662x1024.jpg 662w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What, like you weren&#8217;t thinking it?\u00a0 Regardless of text\/image balance and screaming blue font, this poster is selling us on one thing for sure: Ekat, you&#8217;re totally smokin&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Pros: <\/strong>Visually effective, with strong impact.\u00a0 Stands out in sea of brunettes.\u00a0 Beautifying campus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong>Voters could lose sight of candidate&#8217;s real political qualifications, beyond stylish blazer.\u00a0 Has already inspired strong desire to pinch poster, candidate&#8217;s cheeks, which is highly inappropriate, makes us feel like somebody&#8217;s <em>bubbe<\/em>. +10 to rambling on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Campaigning started bright &#8216;n early this morning, and the halls &amp;
