Although the streets are usually packed with people, the city still feels barren and undecorated. Pragmatic to a fault.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4296.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-143\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4296-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4296-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4296-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4296-768x514.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But for the same reason, Toronto is not pretentious. The lack of green space makes the moss-covered buildings stand out. The lack of bike lanes make the brave cyclist outstanding. The abundance of concrete boosts the aesthetic of the brick.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4309.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-140\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4309-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4309-1024x685.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4309-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/amydo\/files\/2017\/10\/DSC_4309-768x514.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although disappointed at the lacklustre complete street design in Toronto, I was fascinated by how well road users share the space and organize themselves. A form of &#8216;disorganized chaos&#8217; as Jane Jacobs had described of big cities: \u201cIntricate minglings of different uses in cities are not a form of chaos. On the contrary, they represent a complex and highly developed form of order.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The modern aspects keep the city interesting.
