About

My name is Andrew Horne, and I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia some time in the 1980s.  I moved to the interior about 30 months into my life, with my mother, father, and new baby brother, finally settling in Kamloops.  There, I would spend all of my adolescent years, until moving back to Vancouver following graduation from high school (Class of 1999, Valleyview Senior Secondary), in order to attend the University of British Columbia.  I completed my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Honor’s Pharmacology in 2004, and started graduate studies in September of that year.  I stayed on at UBC for graduate studies in the lab of Dr. David Fedida, completing my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Physiology in July 2010.  I was hired as a (then) Instructor by the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics (still at UBC…) in September 2010, a position that I continue to hold to this date, presently as Associate Professor of Teaching.

Outside of UBC, I am known to have a propensity for dabbling in many things.  I enjoy spending time outdoors – hiking, backpacking and camping in the summer, and skiing (downhill and cross-country) in the winter.  Though with the young family and aging body, I don’t do these nearly as much as past me thought he would (and present me wishes he could!).

I love photography, a hobby that truly complements my enjoyment of hiking, and has served me well in the pursuit of many unique shots (all of the nature shots you see on my webpage, unless otherwise specified, were taken by my own hand).  In addition, I enjoy puzzles and board games for the stimulation of the mind.  I am an big fan of crossword puzzles (New York Times, and cryptic crosswords) and logic/deduction puzzles – in my “glory” days, I even placed fourth in Canada in the WPC qualifying test…good enough for an invite to represent the team in Finland (an invitation I sadly had to decline).  I have an avid interest in the world of sport, both as a competitor (albeit an average one, at best) and a spectator.  I am loyal to my team(s) – the Vancouver Canucks (NHL) and the British Columbia Lions (CFL) are the teams I most ardently support, although I exhibit a passing interest in many other teams, as the seasons come and go throughout the year.  I love to cook, and bake – which helps facilitate my enjoyment of quality food.  In my more leisurely states, I can be found watching movies, reading, or playing adult strategy board games with friends.

I think I’ll end there, and hope I have sated your appetite for information.  Thanks for reading.
