2 Basic Metrics for Beginners to Know in Google Analytics

Google Analytics can seem like an intimidating piece of software at first glance. The amount of data it accumulates is amazing and daunting at the same time.

For beginners, it’s helpful to focus on just a couple things before expanding. Understanding these two metrics will help you get started and give you a good base to leap from.

1. Visitors

Visitors allows you to figure out who’s visiting your website, how long they’re spending on each page, and their average time spent on the website among other things. Google Analytics will also track these metrics on a timeline, from which you can select the dates.

Bounce Rate is the  the percentage of visitors who enter the site and leave immediately rather than continue viewing other pages within the same site.

2. Sources

Sources are incredibly useful to understand when trying to figure out the best strategy for SEO. For example, if you find that almost all of your traffic comes directly, your website may not be coming up in Google for relevant keywords. This graph indicates that 53.75% of traffic comes from search. You may be happy with that, or you may want to try and improve it somehow. See my other blog post What’s the Secret to SEO? on how to improve SEO.
