The Easiest Way to Learn Web Development? (My Review on Treehouse)

Last month on my Twitter account I mentioned that Treehouse was having a scholarship giveaway . Well, the results are in and they ended up giving away 5000 Gold Memberships to students across the globe. Fortunately, I was won of the lucky recipients!

Needless to say I’m pretty excited. If you don’t know what Treehouse is, it describes itself as “the best way to learn how to design and develop for the web and iOS”.

Now, I’m no web developer (nor am I looking to be one). I’m in marketing and I enjoy what I do. But there has always been something of a mystique surrounding web development that I’ve always had an interest in. Seeing as how my passion is digital marketing, I thought it would be useful to learn the back end of the digital world.

I’ve had a day to evaluate Treehouse so far, and I’ve been really impressed. In about 4 hours, I was been able to slap together a primitive website homepage. All lovingly guided through each step with 3-10 minute video tutorials and quizzes.

When you log in to Treehouse for the first time, it’ll ask you what you’d like to learn about. There are an array of choices, including Web Design, iOS apps, Android apps and more. Within each category, there are a number of tutorials that earn you badges. For example, because I selected that I’d like to learn about web development and design, Treehouse took me through to these options:

Naturally, I selected “Build a Simple Website” to start off. Within that project, these are the tutorials I’ve been taken through:

As you can see, Treehouse sections off each step of building the website nicely. It starts off with the bare basics, then moves on to HTML, Website Structure, CSS (Styling Content), then finally Launching the website. Through each tutorial you’re actually building a website yourself, and I’ve found it to be a really effective way to learn.

This is an example of one of the tutorial videos. Remember that this is the bare basics! So, as I mentioned before after around 4 hours last night I was able to load up my very own basic website. This is what it looks like:

Alright alright it needs some work, but for just 4 hours of coding HTML and CSS I’ve been really excited about the progress.

So is Treehouse right for you?

I’m not sure, it really depends how invested in digital marketing you are. But I know that from just 4 hours of learning, I’ve already developed a new understanding for web dev and design. If you’re really curious, I recommend you go the website and try a few free tutorials for yourself. See what you think! And let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to help out.
