How to Build Your Twitter Following

Diving into Twitter for the first time can be overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you get followers?

In this post, we’ll be focusing on the second question “How do you get followers?”. And it’s a good one, especially if you’re relatively new to Twitter. There are a number of ways to gain a following, but in this post we’ll focus on one strategy.

Follow Your Target Market
Have you established your target market yet? If you haven’t you should! Yes, this is digital marketing but the principals of traditional marketing remain the same. So scrounge up your pen and paper and get to work. If you’re running a company Twitter handle, chances are you’re already well on your way. If it’s a personal account you’d like to grow, think about people that would be interested in you and the content you post.

So, you have a target market, now what?

Well, there’s a special tool I use to find people I think would like my content. And the strategy is simple: find someone who posts relatively similar content to you in your industry with a decent sized following, and connect with the followers they have.

I’ll use my good friend Mike Abasov as an example. He’s a student in digital marketing like me, and he’s also located in Vancouver. My target market is Vancouver/Seattle Digital Marketing professionals, so geographically it aligns nicely. Mike has about 2000 followers which is a good number to pull from.

The tool I use to follow is called Tweepi, and it’s available for free. Go there now, log in with your Twitter account and follow these next steps to get started!

1. Once you’ve logged in, you should come to dashboard that looks like this:

2. Click “Follow Followers”

3. Type in the Twitter handle of someone similar to you, and click “Start Following”.

4. Voila! A list of all their followers. The preset columns will show metrics like # of followers and when the persons last tweet was. I find these to be useful metrics to determine if I’d like to network with someone.

5. You can customize the columns that are displayed by selecting “Columns”. These are the columns I like to have running.

With these columns selected, you can get a birds eye view of who each user is (Bio), where their from (Location) and how active they are (Last Tweet).

6. Select the users that fit within your target market.

7. Click the “Follow” button.

8. Connect with each user over Twitter! Make sure you don’t just follow and forget. You’re following because you think there’s a valuable relationship to be made. Also, remember this should just be one small aspect of your Twitter strategy. Good luck!
