My first blog ever! Tennis is back to Canada, better still Vancouver, and best of all its happening at Thunderbird arena, just opposite my home on the Feb 10-12 . Apparently the tickets were sold out in 25 minutes but somehow i manage to get one.
Way to go and thank you, Vasek Pospisil the 21-year-old from Vernon, B.C who won the decider to bring Canada back to the elite group after 20 years.
What has this got to do with marketing?
Having been involved in some training with the UBC tennis team and Club, there has been critics that tennis isnt popular. The independent UBC tennis Club has been organizing different events to try to promote tennis in UBC. Although it has succeeded in some way, the UBC tennis unfortunately has yet to reach varsity status unlike the more popular swimming or hockey team. However, 2011 things began to look promising not only for Canada tennis but also for UBC tennis. UBC tennis has recently launched their new indoor tennis facility adding another 8 indoor courts to their existing 3. It began last year when the government through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) decided to contribute some funds to expand the Thunderbird Park aiming to create employment opportunities and meet increased demand by students, varsity teams, staff and faculty, and residents for recreational facilities. The completion of the new tennis facilities cannot come at a better time with the arrival of the Davis cup which is to be held at UBC. Was this good foresight? But its the success of Canada’s tennis which ignited the most enthusiasm around the tennis community and people wanting to engage in the sport. The Davis cup tie will be telecasted live to around the world and will reach millions around the globe. This exposure will certainly promote tennis in Canada and UBC. This event and completion of the new indoor facility can only manifest new and draw existing talents making UBC and Canada their choice to represent. All this can only mean one thing, UBC Tennis is back and its future looks promising.
