My first day at Hellings Elementary School was positive and motivating. The school advisors were extremely nice and I really felt welcomed. All of the classrooms have good classroom management and the transitions in the classroom worked positively well. Some teachers would count to five, while one teacher used a shaker that made a soft sound to get students attention. All of the teachers were really passionate teaching their students and I really liked seeing that. None were firm with the students and it showed a caring environment. I noticed a lot of long pauses when explaining the lesson for that time period. It really helped what Roxanne was telling us that being patient is the key and eventually someone will speak up. The primary grades had lots of transition posters that described how to be respectful in the classroom and outside. Some transitions I observed were to listen effectively and help others. In the intermediate grades I notice there were not that many posters only few. Moreover, I noticed that a lot of the students struggled learning and there were EA’s in majority of the classrooms. I want to see what strategies I could use to help students understand their learning. Overall, I am looking forward being a teacher candidate in this school and build a strong relationship with everyone.
Great observations! Many of these thoughts will be very useful to you when you begin teaching your practicum class!
