External Factors impact on BC Hydro’s Business model

images-2 First nation Government strongly rejected the Site C hydroelectric megaproject from BC Hydro company due to the fact that the fist nation leaders believed that this project would cause environmental issues, such as destroying farmland and wildlife habitat. Also, they claimed that constructing and operating a dam and 1,100-megawatt hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River would create negative impacts on fishing opportunities. In general, First Nation were more care about their aboriginal utilities and focused on their governs on natural resources. All these environmental or social factors threaten the megaproject of BC Hydro Company.
Actually, these problems can all be solved. For example, for environmental factors, BC Hydro can advance its technology in order to avoid the possibilities to destroy farmland or wildlife habitat. Furthermore, they can communicate with the First Nation Group and try to set up relationship with them, which means understanding what Fist Nation really wants and satisfying their needs. As an example, because first nation is worrying that the dam may cause flooding and “impair their right to fish, hunt and use the area for ceremony purposes,” the company can contribute a part of profits to native people as compensations but require them to refuse other companies to set up dam in their region. Through this kind of negotiation, the company can get comparative advantage and build barriers to entry at the same time.

Reply to Chelsea Choi’s blog– SAY ELLO TO THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

After reading the post about a new public media, Ello, I start to think about the different social medium around the world and their privacy policies. Actually, people who like to use social network to communicate with each other are more focusing on their own privacies because they want to use fictitious names to express their ideas online. Therefore, they do not want to offer too much personal information to the public medium and worry about the problem of privacy disclosure. Facebook, one of the most popular social networks among teenagers, not only tracks and sells users’ online activity to the third party, but it also asks players to use their real identities. This new regulation increases users worry and finally loses customers. Furthermore, similar to Facebook, Wechat was also set up a brand-new policy that asked users to sign in with their real identities, which increased the complexity of application and left users feeling exposed. So I think this kind of policy should be stopped if they want to keep the amount of users.
Nowadays, many swindlers use special ways to get customers’ information, such as name or phone number, from some social medium and then send fraudulent messages to these customers to ask money. Even though most of the individuals do not believe in these messages, some people, especially older people, will believe it and send money to the swindlers. Thus, it is really important for social networks to make sure that they will not disclose any personal information about their customers and set up an integrated and safety privacy policy.

Alibaba Soars in IPO

As a publicly traded company, Alibaba got attentions from people all around the world. Because of its amazing rate of growth, many investors regarded Alibaba as an unlimited potential company. Based on the profits it earned during the last few weeks, the CEO, Jack Ma, ambitiously said “we want to be bigger than Wal-Mart.” Many economists gave a high evaluation about Alibaba, “There are very few companies that are this big, grow this fast and are this profitable.”
Different from other companies, such as Amazon and Paypal, Alibaba has its own business model. It does not sell good directly to customers but serves more as a channel that connects the buyers and sellers in small business. Actually, this new business model helps Alibaba gains more profits than it expected before.
In fact, almost 88% of Americans don’t know the Alibaba until they became a publicly traded company. After many years development, Alibaba becomes a good place for customers to shop online and also for brands to sell to buyers. According to the latest fiscal year ending, the company earned $3.7-billion, which is more profitable than eBay Inc, and had market value of about $150 billion. Except for the growth rate of consumers in China, Alibaba plans to extend it markets to US and Europe. However, it is not easy for Alibaba to extend international online-shopping markets because of the different features that important to online shoppers in China and Europe. Therefore, Alibaba still needed time to better understand the European online shoppers and find ways to overcome other online shopping companies. images

Dueling Scholarship Program in China

News from http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/08/28/in-china-dueling-scholarship-programs-from-billionaires/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 by Keith Bradsher

Students’ going to western countries for learning is gradually becoming a trend. Some billionaires donate money to set up scholarship funds so as to assist students in studying abroad. This passage introduces two individuals, Mr.Schwarzman and Ms. Zhang, who gave money to send Chinese students to the United State. Mr. Schwarzman gave $100 billion dollars to start a one-year graduate program at one of the Beijing Universities modeled on the Rhodes scholar program at Oxford, while Ms. Zhang donated $100 million from her company’s charitable foundation to American universities to bankroll need-based scholarships for Chinese students. Although they donated money in different means, they have similar purpose—helping Chinese students to study in the United State.
Actually, there are so many opulence families exist in China and it will be a good way to appeal them to take part in this program and donate part of their money to students who have gaps between their educational aspirations and their means. Because through this way, not only can Chinese students gain opportunities to get better educations, but it offers a chance for developing China to communicate with the rest of the world and may enhance the relationship between China and the United State at the same time.

Business Ethics—blurred lines

Business ethics is always a topic that many people care about. In this passage, it talks about a common issue for most employees: the blurred lines between company time and their own time. Employees have lot of work to do everyday and most of them can not finish them during the company time so they will bring work home and use their own computers or other supplies to complete. Therefore, is it reasonable for them to use the companies’ tools for their personal need? This passage gives a good case study about this question.

Actually, as an ethical employee, you should not use company properties, including time, to do your personal things because the company hires you and give you stuff to do things related to your work. However, it does not mean you can not try other work but the premises are that you should use your personal time to do your personal stuff and what you do does not hurt your company.
