Aujourd’hui, c’est le depart. Tout est pret, nous atelons les tracteurs et
commencons la danse. Tout le monde au point mort, le premier tracteur
démarre, puis des que l’élingue (la corde reliant le tracteur avec sa
charge) se tend, le second démarre, puis le troisième. Catastrophe:
l’élingue se romp, et il faut tout recommencer. Par malchance, un des
tracteurs est endomagé, et tous les mécaniciens s’affèrent. Une fois
réparé (ce sont des magiciens, les mécanos), on se prepare à nouveau au
depart. Il fait chaud, juste au dessus de zero degrés, la neige tombe
intensément et cette neige collante adhere trop au tracteurs et au skis
des traineaux. Notre puissance n’est pas suffisante pour tirer toutes les
charges. On commence par envoyer seulement la moitié du convois dans la
pente la plus raide, puis on vient chercher la deuxième partie. Apres ca,
il nous faut toujours l’aide d’un tracteur supplémentaire. Le jour blanc
rend aussi difficile de suivre la trace de la route faite devant nous, et
dès que l’on sort de la zone damée, c’est l’enlisement. Après 10 heures de
conduite interrompue, nous n’avons avancé que de 16 km. Ce fut une longue
journée remplie de péripéties, et demain, nous espérons un temps un peu
meilleur qui nous permette d’avancer.

Today, it’s finally time to get going! Everything is ready, we attach all
of the tractors and sleds back to back and start the dance. The first
tractor starts, until the rope between the tractor and the trailer
tensions, and each tractor starts when they see the rope in front of them
tension up. You have to be very focused or the tractor will start sliding
and digging itself into the snow. Our first attempt is not very successful,
and one of the rope breaks under tension. To make matters worse, the
tractor has an oil leak, but the issue was unrelated. Suddenly, all of the
mechanics run to the tractor and start doing their magic. An hour later,
we are back in business. The warm temperature and the fresh snowfall make
the snow soft and sticky, and we do not have enough power to pull all of
the load. After trying hard and digging ourselves into the snow a few
times, we decide to send half the load first through the steepest section
and come back for the second half afterwards. After that, we get the help
of an extra tractor from the base, but it’s still quite tricky. The white-out conditions from the snowfall don’t help with staying on the hardened
path, and every time we stray off the road, we risk sinking in. We try to
follow the marks on the ground left by the tractors that broke the trail a week
ago, and we have a GPS track, but the going is hard. In the end, after
driving stop and go for 10 hours, we only covered 16km. Let’s hope that
the weather conditions will make it easier on us tomorrow!
