January 2022: (Faculty wide) Overcoming racism in teacher education

Meeting Facilitators: Dr. Ryuko Kubota and Dr. Ashley Moore

In this meeting of the LLED Antiracist Caucuses (BIPOC/Racialized Caucus & White Caucus), we will discuss racism and antiracism in teacher education at UBC. The meetings are always open to anyone at UBC, but for this meeting, a special emphasis is placed on widening participation across the Faculty of Education.

Stimulus Texts:

Please read the short stimulus text below, a newspaper article, before our meeting on January 24th. It is just over 3,500 words long, which takes about 14 minutes at an average reading speed. The article focuses on the experiences of two racialized teacher candidates who completed their professional training at UBC. Rather than focus on the particulars of these specific cases in our meeting, we will use the article to stimulate a wider discussion about race, (anti)racism and other intersecting forms of (anti)oppression in teacher education at UBC.

Optional Stimulus Text
Discussion Questions
  • What kinds of racial (and other intersecting forms of) discrimination can teacher candidates face while taking courses?
  • What kinds of racial (and other intersecting forms of) discrimination can teacher candidates face while on their practicum placements?
  • What are some possible solutions to those problems?
  • Do you have another story to share related to (anti)racism and intersecting forms of oppression in teacher education?
