November 2020: Description of LLED in our job ads

Meeting Facilitators: Dr. Meghan Corella and Dr. Ryuko Kubota

In this caucus, we will continue to focus on hiring practices, particularly the description of the department and the Faculty of Education in our job ads. These descriptions, and the realities they represent, are important when it comes to attracting and retaining racialized/BIPOC faculty.

Below are the discussion questions and materials that will guide this session. Please take some time to look through these, especially Dr. Annette Henry’s recent guest post for the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (10-minute read), before our meeting.

(Optional reading about race-based caucuses: For those who haven’t attended a race-based caucus before and want to learn more about them, here is one good resource.)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Based on your understanding of Dr. Henry’s guest post, what might the search committees of university departments like LLED do to attract hire and retain black and other underrepresented racialized faculty?
  2. How do these ideas relate to the construction of LLED as a department in the following recent job ad?
