October 2022: Systemic racism as seen in sports

Meeting Facilitators: Dr. Ryuko Kubota, Anastasia Zhuravleva, and Sadia Shad

In this meeting of the LLED Antiracist Caucuses (IBPOC/Racialised Caucus & White Caucus), we will discuss systemic racism, especially focusing on racism in sports such as ice hockey in the Canadian context. We will also talk about how racism shows up in systemic ways across institutions—sports, education, academia, politics, etc.

Stimulus Text:

Please read this short stimulus text TIFF: Unmasking Hockey’s Troubled Racial History in ‘Black Ice’ (5 minutes to read or listen) before our meeting on October 5th, 12:30-2:00 pm.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What is racism? How is racism manifested individually and in society?
  2. Sports and race in general––Why are there representational imbalances of race in ice hockey, figure skating, gymnastics, basketball, track and field, swimming, etc.?;
  3. Intersectionality—How do other identities, such as gender, intersect with racial biases?
  4. Trajectories in history––How has systemic racism in sports changed over time? What has influenced the change?
  5. Are there any examples of systemic racism (education, politics, etc.)? In what ways is systemic racism manifested in other social institutions?
  6. What are the challenges and limitations of pursuing eradicating systemic racism only (i.e., having greater representational equality)?
