As of earlier today, Facebook has confirmed that the site has hit the milestone of 1,000,000,000 active users. With this accomplishment, Facebook released its first television commercial. The 90 second spot will be broadcast “in 13 markets: the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Japan and Russia” according to adage.com.
Although the move was fairly ineffective in terms of exposure, seeing as practically anybody with access to a computer knows about the internet behemoth that is Facebook, the ad will reinforce Facebook’s dominance of the market, and remind everybody that they aren’t going anywhere any time soon. “Ms. Van Dyck, head of consumer marketing emphasized that “the ad is about sharing the company’s values with people who are already logging onto Facebook daily, she acknowledged there’s a message for people who haven’t joined yet” (2012, adage.com).
