The New Age Pirate

Now more than ever, Ontario streets and highways are being bombarded with questionable tow-truck operators that capitalize on the misfortune of others. The ‘highway pirate’ has become a serious problem in the country’s headquarter province, corrupting an enterprise that costs Ontario commuters two billion dollars a year. Lax regulations in the province allow crooked tow-truck drivers to charge astronomical fees for their simple service as confused car owners unknowingly submit themselves to this unethical scam.

The ease with which these acts are gotten away with are largely the result of the Authority Principle of consumer behaviour; people tend to respect and not question those in a position of authority, such as a tow truck operator. The situation is also very much a factor contributing to the driver’s unquestioning state, considering the high stress involved with having a broken down car or being in an accident. These operators are taking advantage of a vulnerable market which, by definition, is unethical and shameful business.
