For those who are not big scotch drinkers, Johnnie Walker has a scale starting at red, and going through to blue, leaving King George V at the top, and for a pricey sum of $500 a bottle. This scale, in itself, is great marketing. People are inclined to spend the higher price for a bottle to show examples of their wealth. This is true of the ruling class, as well as the criminal class, who buy the most expensive bottle to show their superiority over other criminal outfits. With that though, the less fortunate still desire what the rich have, so Johnnie Walker has provided its red label at a price of $11, thus enabling the low class to buy it as well. Overall, Johnnie Walker should be set to take a large market share away from standard alcohols by distinguishing their product as being better, both in a drinking sense, as well as a powerful status symbol.

Source: The Economist: http://www.economist.com/node/21531026

Image: http://www.luxist.com/2007/03/31/johnnie-walker-king-george-v-blue-label-whisky/

All societies have status symbols.
