For this activity, members of our cohort brought in cultural artifacts that were personally meaningful to them. Together with our colour teams, we created a tableau in which we arranged the articles strategically on our tables. Upon completion, the entire class took turns circulating in a clockwise manner to view each display for a few mintues. A great exercise is to have students try to make sense of the tableau and try to figure out what the story behind it is. It is important to remind students to always be respectful when cultural artifacts are brought into the classroom and to be mindful of the conversations which surround such sentimental pieces. Generally speaking, students should refrain from touching artifacts unless they have the permission of the individual it belongs to.

This activity is a great way to learn about different cultures in the classroom and to promote appreciation for this concept in your students and school community. It was very interesting to hear the stories which accompanied the artifacts that our classmates brought. This would be a great extension to a lesson or unit on cultures and/or festivals and inviting parents to view and take part in the process would be another way to engage and involve the community.
