Painting: Exploring Colour

There are several ways to explore colour…

Questions for inquiry:

  • What is a tint?
  • What is a shade?
  • Can you make a painting using only one colour, white and black?
  • Starting with only Red, Yellow and Blue… what other colours can we make?

 

Topics of discussion can include complimentary colours, analogous colours, tints and shades. All activities can be framed from an inquiry and exploration perspective: For example “what happens if we add white to a primary colour? You can also explore non traditional materials…What can you use to make marks with paint? Brushes, sponges, plastic utensils, fingers, hands, or tissues…

Basic Materials for Exploring Paint and Colour:

  • Red paint
  • Yellow paint
  • Blue paint
  • White paint
  • Black paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Sponges
  • Water and cups for water
