Papier Mâché

Paper mâché can be done over-top of almost anything, so long as the paper mâché strips can lay flat onto the object. Often in elementary school, paper mâché is made over a balloon, like we have done here.

Materials:

  • Elmer’s art paste (mixed with water, each container makes 4 quarts of paste)
  • Newspaper strips (one grain naturally rips into strips, one does not. Find the rip-able one, and make about 1.5 inch wide strips.)
  • Balloon (or other structure)
  • Paper – twisted together for the balloon to stand on.

Ideas:

  • faces (on balloons)
  • masks
  • animals (penguin, turtle, etc.)
  • pencil holder
  • bowls (not for food)
  • globe
  • maraca
  • decorations, ornaments

Once dried, the paper mâché can be painted on.
Or, a collage can be created on it as the decoration. (In this case, it doesn’t need to wait until dried.)
