How to Troubleshoot An iPhone Not Charging

You can use these steps at home to quickly resolve issues that impact iPhone charging.

  1. Please check the charging cable.

Even if the USB adapter or cable does not appear damaged, test its performance to be sure. Charge your phone with another charging cable compatible with your device and connect it. Before purchasing a different cable, have a friend or relative try your existing cable.

Because we use our phone cables daily – wrapping them up and plugging them in at unusual angles – it is not uncommon for them to malfunction. Wireless charging is not recommended. Try using a conventional charging cable instead.

  1. Try different outlets.

Sometimes it is easy to overlook solutions that seem obvious. If your charging cable seems to be functioning properly, try using a wall outlet in a different room. Sometimes a breaker may switch without your notice, or an outlet might control a switch without you noticing. Using an alternate power outlet ensures the wall outlet is not causing the phone’s charging problems.

Note: If you are on the move, try using a different computer, an external battery, or a docking station.

  1. Check for dirt, lint, and debris in the iPhone charging port.

Once you have determined that the charging cable and the power source are working properly, check the charging port of your phone to ensure it is not clogged with dirt, lint, and debris. If you observe that dust or gunk is obstructing the charging port, do not use a toothpick, toothbrush, or any sharp object to clean it! Lodging sharp objects into the iPhone’s charging port may cause more damage. Instead, blow gently into the charging port or blow with compressed air to remove any debris. Then, plug your iPhone into a power source once again to verify that it is charging.

  1. Keep the iPhone plugged into the charger for up to an hour.

Next, leave your iPhone plugged in for approximately one hour. On a completely dead device, it might take some time to recover power; however, after several minutes, a dead battery icon should appear on the screen. If you see this icon for a dead battery, you should leave it to charge until it is charged enough to turn on.

  1. Restart your iOS device.

Finally, if the iPhone doesn’t charge after plugging it in for an hour, try forcing it to restart.

The iPhone 8 and later models of iPhone can be forced to restart by pushing down on the volume button rapidly for a few seconds and then releasing it. Next, repeat the process using the downward volume control. Then press and hold the side button until you see Apple’s logo on the screen.

For the iPhone 7, hold both the side volume button and the bottom volume button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.

If you want to force restart your iPhone 6 or earlier, hit the home and side buttons until you see the Apple logo.

Once you see the Apple logo on the screen, your device is restarting. Plug your iPhone in again for 30 – 60 minutes.
