Clay

The use of clay in an art class can build a lot more than just an art project. Clay is a wonderful way of allowing students to be creative, let out their emotions and building upon their motor skills. Clay may be expensive for certain schools, however purchasing in bulk and using it wisely it is a great tool to have. Clay can be recycled even if it has dried out; with a bit of work and water, this is an art medium that can be environmentally friendly. Clay gives students the ability to mold, shape and build what they would like. It has the ability to be altered prior to becoming drying, this allows for students to alter what they are making if they desire. Even though students may not necessarily like the outcome of their masterpiece, as an educator you can remind them that it is unique and no one else could have made it as well as they did. Giving students this small boost in self-esteem can help them feel more comfortable and more proud of their art.
