Arts Multilingual Week 2022<\/a>\u00a0(October 31st to November 4th, 2022) is organized in collaboration with over a dozen units across campus. The week\u2019s events will feature students, scholars, and community members reflecting on multilingualism as a practice, discussing career opportunities for multilingual graduates<\/a>, and performing multilingualism through artistic means.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The week of events will open with a roundtable on \u201cWhy we study languages”<\/a> with\u00a0Associate Dean Stefania Burk<\/a> in conversation with faculty members from across the language disciplines. Then Arts Multilingual Week programming<\/a> explodes with five days of programming that include three exciting student-centred events:\u00a0an exhibition of untranslatable words and idioms, a Speech Contest on \u201cWhat Multilingualism means to me…\u201d<\/a> and a Multilingual Poetry Slam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In addition to Lightning Talks on Multilingual Pedagogies<\/a> and various events on Multilingualism in teaching<\/a>, research, and community practice<\/a>, Arts Multilingual Week will also feature conversations on Indigenous languages and the Indigenous Atlas of Canada<\/a>, Indigenizing language programs<\/a>, a virtual American Sign Language (ASL) workshop,<\/a> an introduction to DeafBlind Protactile Communication,<\/a> and a presentation on the Deaf community and the marginalization of signed languages<\/a> by\u00a0local celebrity and UBC instructor\u00a0Nigel Howard<\/a>\u00a0as well as a Bollywood Film Night with Popcorn and Pakora<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Finally, Dr. Guofang Li<\/a>, UBC Professor and Canada Research Chair in Transnational\/Global Perspectives of Language and Literacy Education of Children and Youth from the Department of Language and Literacy Education will give a keynote entitled “Multilingualism as a Gift: Changing Mindsets, Changing Worlds”<\/a>; Indigenous comics artist\u00a0Cole Pauls<\/a>\u00a0will present his work on Indigenous language revitalization and his newest comic book Kw\u00e4nd\u01d6r<\/a>;\u00a0and comics scholar\u00a0Katherine Kelp-Stebbins<\/a>\u00a0will present research from her new book\u00a0How Comics Travel: Publication, Translation, Radical Literacies\u00a0(2022)<\/a> in a talk entitled “Multilingualism in Comics from Haida Gwaii to Beirut.”<\/a><\/p>\n

Events will take place in Dodson (room 302) in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre<\/a> (IKBLC) or in the Asian Studies Auditorium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
