What?
You will write three responses to three different classmates’ Logs over the course of the semester. These responses should be able to be constructive for the peer to whom you are writing. For example, “I like this photo!” is not constructive because the statement does not provide any context for your opinion that could help your peer understand how their renderings are landing in the perception of others. Alternatively, “I like the way the colour gradient of the leaf is prominent in this photo,” could be constructive, for it identifies something specific about the choices your peer has made and highlights colour gradients as an object of interest.
Choose a peer who has not yet received a (labelled) peer response during the current unit, to ensure a somewhat even spread of responses. Label the top of your comment “Peer Response #[insert number]”, to signal that this is a submission for the assignment. Each response should be approximately 500 words. Feel free to include photos, drawings, audio, or video clips as appropriate, following the media guidelines in the Log assignment.
Why?
Somewhere in between the call and response of social media and the call and response of formalized scholarship will be the in-class “logosphere.” We will aim to create a nourishing and constructive digital environment where we can commune as a class even while we are in different neighborhoods and habitats practicing attentive repetition. These peer-responses will encourage interaction with classmates’ Logs, which can introduce new ideas to fold into one’s own practice and reflection.
When?
You will post one peer response each during units 3, 4, and 5 respectively.
At the start of each following unit, you will evaluate the peer responses you have received on your Log (see below).
Evaluation
Peer responses are worth 15% of your course grade, 5% for each response. They are graded by means of peer assessment. That means that the peer you responded to will give your response a grade. Conversely, you will grade the responses that you receive on your Log posts. You will be using the following rubric:
| Points | |
|---|---|
| 5 | Response is constructive and insightful; makes you perceive your post in a completely new way; engages with the recording, caption, and descriptive text. |
| 3 | Response is constructive; provides some new insight into your own post; engages with both the recording and caption. |
| 1 | Response is not constructive; provides no insight into the author’s perception of your post; does not engage with the caption or descriptive text. |
