Project Outline: Social Media Programming for Young Adults

This past week in LIBR 559M, our focus was on creation. Earlier in the week I shared a YouTube video with my class that I made for another SLAIS course. However, this week also marked my first ever upload to SlideShare. The file I uploaded is an outline of my final project for the class, which will be a proposal for a public library program aimed at encouraging young adults to learn about social media tools and create their own content.  The slides are below:

I’d love to have your feedback on this! Leave me a comment, send me an email (aeb.ashmore@gmail.com), or tweet @amyashmore.

Nice outline; and props for taking on the challenge of engaging youth in library services, Amy. It would be neat if your ideas could be incorporated into something like this: http://www.nywriterscoalition.org/ (I worked here for a little while after college). It’s fun teaching interested kids. SO hard to get them engaged if they aren’t…my 17 year old stepbrother is enough an example for me even without professional teaching experience.

Terrific outline. May I recommend a book that might work well as a companion? It’s called “The Big Book of Pop Culture: A How-to Guide for Young Artists” by Hal Niedzviecki (editor of Broken Pencil magazine, which focuses on the indie zine culture). It focuses primarily on the DIY culture, which is a good fit for Teens and Young Adults who are interested in creating their own online content. I’ve thumbed through it myself and was very impressed. Here is a review written by a librarian: http://www.umanitoba.ca/outreach/cm/vol13/no22/popculture.html
