Three Definitions
In this assignment, we were required to provide three definitions of a term: parenthetical, sentence, and expanded definitions. I chose to define ‘neuroplasticity’ to an audience who has a non-scientific background. This assignment showcases my ability to cater definitions and explain a term using different methods to a specific audience.
Peer Review of the Definitions Assignment
This assignment provided a chance for me to peer review a partner’s definitions. I was able to provide a fresh perspective on the definitions on a term I have not previously seen and provided suggestions on how to clarify the definitions for their intended audience. It demonstrates my ability to identify both strengths and areas for improvement in my partner’s work and use methods to clearly define a term.
Formal Report Proposal
The objective of this assignment was to brainstorm and propose a research venture to the professor. In the proposal, I detailed specific aspects of my intended research, such as the purpose, intended audience, methodology, and scope. It allowed me to learn how to formally construct a research proposal for both academic and professional settings.
Progress Report
The progress report was intended for us to detail our progress of research and drafting of our formal report to the instructor. The purpose of research, intended audience, and significance were included. We also listed a clear research plan and writing schedule. This progress report demonstrates my ability to carefully blueprint a formal report as well as detail a clear schedule for the reader of my report, which allows them to know when to expect certain elements of the report.
Peer Review of the Formal Report
The objective of this assignment was to provide a review for each section of a partner’s formal report draft. I focused on the overall clarity and flow of the report and the use of visuals to supplement the context provided. This gave me a chance to provide a fresh perspective of the report, pointing out things that my partner may have missed and suggesting ways he could improve the persuasiveness of his report.
Formal Report
For my formal report, I researched the effectiveness and feasibility of structural and non-structural interventions to improve the accessibility of a fitness facility. It includes research on health and ethical implications, an observational study, interviews with members with disabilities, and surveys. With this collected information, I performed a cost-benefit analysis and recommended feasible options to improve accessibility at the fitness facility. Completing this report demonstrates my ability to write professionally and make detailed and well-supported recommendations.
Complaint and Response Letters
This assignment provided a chance to write a formal letter of complaint and a negative response to those letters. In my letters, I complained about a poor moving service and responded with “bad” news, stating that the request cannot be completely fulfilled. This assignment taught me how to write with a “you” attitude in both situations. It also gave me the chance to look at complaints and responses in two different perspectives and communicate my thoughts professionally.
Peer Review of the Application Package
This peer review gave me a chance to look at how others approached writing a cover letter, resume, and letters requesting references. I provided comments on both strengths and areas for improvement for each section of my partner’s work. It taught me the different approaches to showcasing skills and interests to recruiters. I also learned to identify key aspects of cover letters and resumes that recruiters would focus on and requesting reference letters with a “you” attitude.
