Abstract

This blog is interested in the current representation of the major Buddhist sites Lumbini, Bodhgaya and Kushinagar, as well as the different factors and influences that have lead to the development of these sites. It particularly focuses on the modern era; therefore, it addresses the issue of religion and modernity. As the analysis of the three different places shows, the main influences are tourism, globalization, Buddhist revivalism, government interventions and the growing interest in profit-making. On the other hand, although the sites have many factors in common, their evolution has not been the same. This is due to different elements, such as the location of these places and their accessibility, the financial resources of the governments, as well as the different religious interpretations regarding the significance of these sites. For example, Bodhgaya already started to flourish as a main Buddhist attraction in the 70s, which explains why this place is so developed today, whereas Lumbini and Kushinagar are only starting to gain a worldwide interest, thus their development is not striking for the moment. However, as the analysis emphasizes, both religious institutions and governments have understood the significance of maintaining and promoting Buddhist sites, be it for religious, cultural or financial purposes. Therefore, they are investing in the further development and promotion of Bodhgaya, Lumbini and Kushinagar, while seeking to maintain a balance between modernity and heritage.
