Education

In our society we view education in a very practical and applicable matter. That is to say, the purpose of education is so that the skills one acquires can be applied in a way to make a person a beneficial and productive citizen. A productive citizen in Vice City is one who can materially benefit the state in order to improve the standard of living in the society itself. Therefore, “schools” in Vice City will focus on skill building, particularly skills that can be applied in the workforce and have direct benefits to the state. In a way, our view on education is similar to Confucius’s view of learning as illustrated in the following passage:

The Master said, “Imagine a person who can recite the several hundred odes by heart but, when delegated to a governmental task, is unable to carry it out, or sent abroad as an envoy, is unable to engage in repartee. No matter how many odes he might have memorized, of what use are they to him?” (The Analects 13.5)

This passage highlights the importance of the applicability of knowledge and not just learning for no use or purpose. Thus, this principle of applicability and usefulness of knowledge can be used to illustrate how our society views education and learning.
