{"id":17,"date":"2019-08-01T11:20:35","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T18:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/asia508a\/?page_id=17"},"modified":"2025-04-01T12:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T19:06:08","slug":"assessment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/asia508a\/assessment\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a id=\"participation\"><\/a>Attendance\/Participation (20%)<\/h2>\n<p>Students are expected to actively participate and take turn leading class discussion.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"essays\"><\/a>Short Essays (15 x 2 = 30%)<\/h2>\n<p>[Updated 5 February 2025]<\/p>\n<p>Two short review essays (about 1,500 words each, to be submitted through <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ubc.ca\/courses\/157722\/assignments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canvas<\/a>) on two different weeks (i.e., Weeks 3\u201311) of readings. Due two weeks after the class meeting in question.<\/p>\n<p>For each essay, you should (not necessary in the following order):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>explain (with specific examples) the key questions\/ideas\/arguments of the text;<\/li>\n<li>reflect on the sources and methodology employed;<\/li>\n<li>explain the book&#8217;s historiographical contexts (in other words, the historical debates the book is engaged with);<\/li>\n<li>identify and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the work in question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"review\"><\/a>Review Essay (50%)<\/h2>\n<p>Write a state-of-the-field essay suitable for publication in a top-tier journal in your field (e.g., the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/journal-of-chinese-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of Chinese History<\/a>. About 5,000 words). Due on April 22.<\/p>\n<p>For this state-of-the-field essay (not to be confused with a literature review), you should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>identify a suitably-scoped academic field that fits your interests (note that a research <em><strong>field<\/strong><\/em> is not the same as a research <em><strong>topic<\/strong><\/em>);<\/li>\n<li>select four to six publications (mostly books) that in your view best exemplify the accomplishments\/directions of this field;<\/li>\n<li>compare and contrast the works selected as well as critically place them (perhaps alongside some of the readings for this seminar) in their historiographical contexts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In particular, you should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>explain the relevance of the chosen publications in the context of a research field and indicate, whenever possible, the common problems\/questions they seek to address;<\/li>\n<li>explain (with specific examples) the key questions\/ideas\/arguments of the works in question and how the authors might be in dialogue with one another;<\/li>\n<li>place the body of works in its historiographical contexts and explain how the chosen publications are connected to one another;<\/li>\n<li>explain the significance (and limitations) of the body of works in question and suggest, whenever possible, some future directions for research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Attendance\/Participation (20%) Students are expected to actively participate and take turn leading class discussion.
