UBC values respect for the person and ideas of all members of the academic community. Harassment and discrimination are not tolerated nor is suppression of academic freedom. UBC provides appropriate accommodation for students with disabilities and for religious observances. UBC values academic honesty and students are expected to acknowledge the ideas generated by others and to uphold the highest academic standards in all of their actions.

Details of the policies and how to access support are available on the UBC Senate website.

Health and Well-being

If you are ill, it is important that you prioritize your health. If this is not your first request for academic concession in this course, or if the course has concluded, please complete the Arts Academic Advising academic concession form as soon as possible so that an advisor can assess your request. If you are a student in a different Faculty, please consult your Faculty’s webpage on academic concession.

Academic Accommodation for Students with Disabilities

Academic accommodation is intended to support students with disabilities or ongoing medical conditions by reducing barriers that may affect academic performance. Students who require academic accommodation must register with the Centre for Accessibility (formerly Access & Diversity), which assesses eligibility and determines appropriate accommodations in accordance with Policy LR7: Academic Accommodation for Students with Disabilities. Academic accommodations are determined by the Centre for Accessibility, not by instructors; however, the instructor may consult with the Centre if a prescribed accommodation appears to conflict with the essential learning outcomes of the course.

Respectful Environment

All interactions in this course are expected to comply with the Respectful Environment Statement.

As a learning community, we bring together diverse experiences, identities, and perspectives, and we share a responsibility to foster an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment. Please treat one another with consideration and notify the instructor of any concerns.

Academic Integrity

The academic enterprise is founded on honesty, civility, and integrity. As members of this enterprise, all students are expected to know, understand, and follow the University’s policies and codes of conduct related to academic integrity (for detailed information, please visit Academic Integrity for Students). At a minimum, this means submitting only your own original work and clearly acknowledging all external sources of information, ideas, or assistance in your submissions. Violations of academic integrity—including plagiarism and cheating—undermine the academic enterprise and will be taken seriously. Confirmed cases will result in a mark of zero for the affected assignment or examination, and more serious penalties may apply if the matter is referred to the Office of the Dean.

Use of Generative AI Tools

This course treats artificial intelligence as a tool that can support historical research and writing, but one that requires transparency and careful verification—much like any other source whose claims a historian would not accept uncritically. How AI may be used varies by assignment, since different tasks are designed to build different skills:

On reading quizzes and discussion posts, the use of AI or translation tools is not permitted; these low-stakes exercises are meant to confirm that you have engaged with the assigned readings yourself.

On the Annotated Bibliography, AI use is a required part of the assignment: you will use it to help identify potential sources, then verify and correct its suggestions against the UBC Library catalog—learning firsthand where it can mislead you.

On other assignments, unless stated otherwise in that assignment’s instructions, AI tools may be used to support grammar and sentence-level clarity, but not to generate the ideas, analysis, or arguments you present as your own. Where an assignment has its own specific AI-use guidelines (as with the Virtual Exhibition, provided upon proposal approval), those guidelines take precedence.

Whenever AI use is permitted or required, you must disclose it, briefly noting which tools you used and how. Presenting AI-generated ideas, analysis, or content as your own, without disclosure, is a violation of academic integrity.

Copyright

Please do not share any course materials that are not already publicly accessible with individuals outside the class.

Learning Resources

Health and Well Being
https://students.ubc.ca/health

Centre for Accessibility
https://students.ubc.ca/about-student-services/centre-for-accessibility/

Arts Academic Advising
https://www.arts.ubc.ca/student-support/academic-support/academic-advising/

Peer Academic Support
https://www.arts.ubc.ca/student-support/academic-support/peer-academic-support/

Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication
https://writing.library.ubc.ca/

Chapman Learning Commons
https://learningcommons.ubc.ca/

Enrolment Services Advisors
https://students.ubc.ca/about-student-services/enrolment-services-advisors

Other Resources

UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative
https://hksi.ubc.ca/

Research Guide: Hong Kong (highly useful)
https://guides.library.ubc.ca/hongkong/

How to Read a Document
https://blogs.ubc.ca/asiahist373/how-to-read-a-document/

History Writing Centre (Peering Tutoring)
https://history.ubc.ca/undergraduate/writing-centre/

How to Cite
https://guides.library.ubc.ca/howtocite

Chicago Manual of Style (Quick Guide)
http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html

How to Cite Asian-Language Sources
http://wiki.ubc.ca/Library:How_to_Cite_Asian-Language_Sources

Jyutping 粵拼 (Cantonese pronunciation and romanization)
https://jyutping.org/en/

Notes on Romanization (Library of Congress)
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pinyin/romcover.html

University Policies UBC provides resources to support student learning and to maintain healthy lifestyles but recognizes that sometimes crises arise and so there are additional resources to access including those for survivors of sexual violence.
