{"id":20,"date":"2020-05-29T23:28:47","date_gmt":"2020-05-30T06:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/assessmentguidebook\/?page_id=20"},"modified":"2020-11-26T12:32:55","modified_gmt":"2020-11-26T19:32:55","slug":"multiple-choice-is-versatile","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/assessmentguidebook\/assessment-appendix\/multiple-choice-is-versatile\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple choice is versatile"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"show-content user_content clearfix enhanced\">\n<p>Multiple choice often gets a bad rap, seen as only being useful for testing memorization and recall of facts.\u00a0 Carefully phrased multiple choice questions can actually be used in the assessment of learning from remembering to synthesis, as the examples below are intended to show.\u00a0 (For more information on these levels, see the page on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/assessmentguidebook\/assessment-appendix\/blooms-taxonomy\/\">Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy<\/a>.)\u00a0 Importantly, multiple choice is ideally suited to online assessment and automatic grading.\u00a0 In addition, many tools (such as quizzing features built into an LMS) offer the ability to provide immediate feedback, contextual to a response selected by a student.\u00a0 In addition, as noted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/assessmentguidebook\/academic-integrity\/\">Academic Integrity<\/a> materials, it is possible to ask a large number of multiple choice questions, randomly ordered and\/or drawn from pools of questions, as a way to reduce the opportunity for misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>Expand the sections below to see multiple choice question examples at each learning level.\u00a0 At the bottom, you will also find a partial list of some multiple choice dos and don&#8217;ts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"random-accordion-id-553\" class=\"accordion-shortcode  accordion-container\">\n<h3 ><a href=\"#level-1-remembering-0\" >Level 1: Remembering<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"level-1-remembering-0\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p><strong>Keywords<\/strong>: recall, list, name, locate, memorize, define,\u2026<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How many degrees of freedom does a spherical bearing have between the inner and outer race?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a. 1<br \/>\nb. 2<br \/>\nc. 3<br \/>\nd. 4<br \/>\ne. 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong>: it is generally best practice to arrange answers in order, where applicable; however, to reduce misconduct, it is also recommended to randomize answer choices to give each student a unique-looking question.\u00a0 Unfortunately, some LMSs, such as Canvas, only have a single setting on a test for the answer randomization so it is not possible to turn randomization on for some questions but not others.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p><h3 ><a href=\"#level-2-understanding-1\" >Level 2: Understanding<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"level-2-understanding-1\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p><strong>Keywords:<\/strong> Recognize, explain, summarize, paraphrase, discuss\u2026<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>A spherical bearing is often used in conjunction with a deep-groove bearing to support a shaft.\u00a0 This is because the spherical bearing...<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a. requires less maintenance<br \/>\nb. is easier to install in confined spaces<br \/>\nc. permits angular misalignment of the shaft<br \/>\nd. permits thermal expansion of the shaft<br \/>\ne. has a higher load rat\u00ad\u00ading for the same size<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong>: as shown, it is generally recommended to place any repeating text in the question stem rather than the answer choices. V - III<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes:<\/strong> I included this example for completeness, but I think it is a stretch.\u00a0 This is the level least suitable for using multiple choice with.\u00a0 As above, a short textbox for students to explain their reasoning could be included with this question if you wanted.\u00a0 See the notes at the end on Accompanying Answer Boxes and Part Marks.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/div><!-- #random-accordion-id-553end of accordion shortcode -->\n<h3>Accompanying Answer Boxes and Part Marks<\/h3>\n<p>If you wanted, you could add answer boxes with multiple choice questions where students describe their answer in some way in writing.\u00a0 You could leave the contents of the boxes ungraded, but available to check if misconduct is suspected on the exam.\u00a0 Alternatively, if you were so inclined, you could use the written elements to assign part marks for students who get the final answer incorrect; the value here is that you could focus your marking efforts on incorrect questions only. For example,<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Air travels without loss in a converging 1-D nozzle as shown in the figure [figure omitted]. If p<sub>2 <\/sub>is 200 Pa lower than p<sub>1<\/sub> and if v<sub>1<\/sub> = 10.0m\/s, what is v<sub>2<\/sub>?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a. 10.0 m\/s<br \/>\nb. 15.3 m\/s<br \/>\nc. 18.3 m\/s<br \/>\nd. 20.8 m\/s<br \/>\ne. 30.6 m\/s<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Please provide all supporting calculations for Question 3 in this box OR Please <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">briefly<\/span> describe the key assumptions and steps in your solution to Question 3 in this box.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<table class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 80%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid; border-color: #1c1c1c;\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"border-style: none; width: 100%; height: 20px;\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"show-content user_content clearfix enhanced\">\n<p>Two examples of phrasing are given in Question 4.\u00a0 The first (showing calculations) might be appropriate if students are writing the exam by hand and scanning their paper, while the second (brief written description) would be more suitable for a fully online exam.<\/p>\n<h3>Some Multiple Choice Dos and Don&#8217;ts<\/h3>\n<p>First, Jim Sibley has a fantastic handout on <a href=\"https:\/\/learntbl.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Jim-Sibley-Writing-Good-Multiple-Choice-Questions.doc\">Writing Good Multiple Choice Questions<\/a>, with tips on constructing questions and interpreting the data that comes out.\u00a0 A list of some other multiple choice dos and don&#8217;ts are below.<\/p>\n<h4>Dos<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to minimize the use of negatives (e.g. &#8220;not,&#8221; &#8220;false,&#8221; etc.) in questions, unless doing so makes the question awkward or more difficult to understand<\/li>\n<li>Use <em><strong>emphasis<\/strong><\/em> to highlight key, easily-overlooked words in the question (e.g. the word &#8220;not&#8221; completely changes a question, so consider emphasizing it as &#8220;<strong>NOT<\/strong>&#8221; instead)<\/li>\n<li>Use complete but clear and concise writing.\u00a0 Try to minimize the amount of reading required, placing repeating text directly in the question stem (see Q2 from the &#8220;Understanding&#8221; section above)<\/li>\n<li>Use qualifiers such as &#8220;best example,&#8221; &#8220;most likely,&#8221; &#8220;least complete&#8221; in the question stem to phrase questions requiring judgement<\/li>\n<li>Arrange answer choices in sequence (see the Remembering and Applying examples above), unless you will be randomizing answer choices (a good practice to enhance exam integrity) on the platform you are using to deliver the questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Don&#8217;ts (or at least things to avoid)<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid giving away the answer in the question stem:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">1. To determine the area beneath a function use an&#8230;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>a. Derivative<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>b. Product<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>c. Integral<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid double negatives in questions (it becomes a logic puzzle, not a test of understanding):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">2. Which of the following is NOT a reason for using multiple choice?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>a. Wanting to avoid manually grading questions<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>b. Not being able to craft a high-level question<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>c. Multiple choice is not an authentic assessment<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid relating one answer to another (and note that the choice letters a., b., c. disappear with some online test platforms)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">3. What colour(s) indicate(s) a tomato is ready to eat?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>a. Red<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>b. Green<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>c. Black<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>d. a and b but not c<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>e. b and c but not a<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"module-sequence-padding\">Similar to the above, try to minimize the use of &#8220;None of the above&#8221; and &#8220;all of the above.&#8221; Furthermore, with randomized answer choices, all of these phrasings can become very confusing if not totally inaccurate (what happens when &#8220;None of the above&#8221; appears as the first choice).<\/li>\n<li>Again related to the above, make sure the question is not open to interpretation (i.e., red tomatoes are most common, but green and black varieties also exist); a better phrasing might be something like &#8220;What colour indicates most tomato varieties are ready to eat?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid giving away the answer in an earlier question (i.e., you only need look at Q3 to figure this one out!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">4. Which of the following is a common method for determining if a tomato is ready to eat?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>a. Symmetry<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>b. Colour<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8230;<\/span>c.
