Why am I leading this Student Directed Seminar?
Ever since first discovering development theory in high school, I have been fascinated by the topic and hungry to learn more. I was left a little disappointed by what was offered at UBC in terms of courses, however, and when the idea of leading a Student Directed Seminar was brought up, I was very excited (and frightened) by the idea of adding to the UBC curriculum, especially when Rohina and I narrowed our focus to such a unique subject of study and analysis! I am passionate about the course we’ve developed and fascinated by the topic, and hope you’ll be as invested in it as I am.
What’s my background?
I’ve recently come off a year-long stint as Premier of the British Columbia Youth Parliament, coordinating service projects and fundraising objectives across the province. I’m entering my third year as a student at UBC, and prior to that spent two years at Langara College, including six months in Orlando, Florida.
What are my hopes for this course?
I hope the SDS will have many dedicated and involved seminarians who are excited about the subject and study of development as Rohina and I are! Just as importantly, I want to focus on ensuring the classroom environment is a comfortable yet rigorous one, and that healthy and analytical discussion is fostered and encouraged by all seminarians. I want everyone to feel comfortable participating, and then to do so! Finally, I hope this course proves to be a learning experience for everyone involved.
