Q: What is a student directed seminar (‘SDS’), exactly?
A: A student directed seminar is an comprehensive course that involves student decision making in most aspects of learning. This includes development of reading lists, curriculum schedules, grading rubrics and providing feedback, culminating in guiding the flow of learning. It is developed by students for students!
Q: Who developed this course?
A: The two student coordinators, Rohina and Chris, collectively developed this course, with assistance from the Faculty Advisor, Dr. Jenny Peterson, and the staff at the Centre for Student Involvement and Careers.
Q: Will this course be offered after Winter Term 2 2018?
A: No, this course will only be offered from January to April 2018. Because of the nature of student directed seminars, this is the only time the course can run.
Q: How many students will there be in the course?
A: The minimum number of students required to run the course is eight (8) and the maximum is fifteen (15).
Q: I am not a Political Science or International Relations Major or Minor. Am I still able to take this seminar?
A: Yes! The seminar is open to students from all backgrounds and faculties – in fact, the more diverse, the better! However, as this course will include discussions of a high-level nature, some knowledge of political science concepts will be required before starting (this is not an intro course).
