Our class’ definition of Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is the ethical code that all members of an academic community (such as UBC) agree to abide by. The ethics that make up that code include, but are not limited to, ensuring honesty in one’s ideas and how they came to be; they can be summed up as “transparency.” Academic integrity matters in particular at an academic institution such as UBC because the goal is innovation; in order to produce new ideas, it’s important to recognize what has already been thought of and, with respect, who thought of them.

Students sometimes commit academic misconduct because of the pressure to produce original work and meet high academic expectation. However, even though academic dishonesty may seem justifiable under certain circumstances, it is important to consider that it negatively affects the entire community as well as your personal future. Academic misconduct should be discussed openly between professors and students.
