Salmon farming is rapidly on the grow. The number of salmon produced on farms exceeds the total number of wild salmon caught. For example, Norwegian salmon farms produced 231 million salmon in 2002 versus 2.5 million caught in the Norwegian coast (Bergh, 2007). In a world where population growth is exponential salmon will be produced at any cost to ensure consumer demands are met. And by any cost, I mean any cost including disregarding the conditions and treatment of salmon in these farms. On this site I will discuss some of the major issues pertaining to salmon welfare in farms. Specifically this site addresses important questions such as:
- Do salmon feel pain?
- What are the measures of salmon welfare?
- Is there one perfect method of measuring salmon welfare?
- What modern technology is used to measure welfare?
- How are salmon vaccinated (procedures and technology)?
- What are the welfare and economic concerns of vaccinating salmon?
- What salmon farming regulations are there in developing and developed countries?
- Are these regulations favouring industry growth and economic development over salmon welfare?
- What are the ethics behind regulations that affect salmon farming?
- What are the ethics of salmon vaccinations?
