Grameen Bank Crisis

Social Entrepreneur Muhammad Yunus opened up a new world of possibilities for Bangladeshi women looking to start their own business. The microcredit scheme has helped these women, and even families, stand on their own feet, and walk their way out of poverty.

However, it is said that the prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, resented the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Mr. Yunus, their long rivalry resulted in Mr. Yunus forced out of the bank. This action, due to political rivalry between the two power leaders, will affect the lives of several Bangladeshi households. The government ownership of Grameen Bank will potentially cause the scheme to fall apart, and the social entrepreneurial aspect of Grameen bank will no longer exist.

It is always said that business and politics go hand-in-hand together, but the interference of politics in the case of Grameen Bank will not only shatter the hopes of millions, but also deter any innovative ideas that may address societal issues. The government has failed to give these people a chance, hence the introduction of Grameen Bank, national ownership of the firm will only worsen the lives of the Bangladeshi’s living in poverty, all due to the political rivalry between two individuals.
